Cyclacel Appoints Dr Howard Marriage as Business Development Director

DUNDEE - 22 July 1998 - Cyclacel Limited, the emerging cancer biotechnology company, has appointed Dr Howard Marriage as Director, Business Development.

Marriage (40) will be responsible for managing Cyclacel's intellectual property estate, licensing activities and outside collaborations. In addition he will be responsible for project management. Before joining Cyclacel, Dr Marriage spent thirteen years at Genzyme Corporation, the top-tier US biotechnology group. As Senior Director of Corporate Development in Europe, he was involved in establishing Genzyme business interests in gene therapy, small molecule drugs, tissue repair and the newest Genzyme spin-off venture, Genzyme Molecular Oncology, where he developed and implemented the global business strategy in genomics. His previous positions at Genzyme were in research management, technology transfer and intellectual property management. Prior to Genzyme he worked at Beecham Pharmaceuticals and Wellcome Laboratories.

Dr Marriage has taken an active role in the development of biotechnology in the UK through many academic, business and government initiatives. In 1997 he directed for EuropaBio the frequently quoted Report, Benchmarking the Competitiveness of Biotechnology in Europe. He earned his Doctorate in Pharmacology at Oxford University and his First Class Degree in Biochemistry and Pharmacology at Southampton University.

Commenting on the appointment, Dr Marriage said: "It is exciting to be working with such innovative scientists and dedicated management. Cyclacel has recently in-licensed Penetratin to accelerate our in-house research and provide many valuable partnering opportunities, I look forward to using my experience in business development and IP management to drive these areas, as well as many others, forward."
